It's still fun and my Mom and I will happily play a quick game. Unfortunately, Custom Heroes doesn't work as well with 2 players. In 3 or higher player counts, this really balances the game, ensuring that one player can't dominate every hand. This gives the losing players more ammunition to win the next hand and forces the winning player to work harder. Second, third, fourth and so on don't get as many points, but they do get to draw more inserts, with last place drawing the most. The winner each hand gets points, but doesn't get to replenish their inserts. Custom Heroes does this the best I've seen in a card game. I love games that allow players who are behind a fighting chance. I haven't even mentioned the most brilliant part of this game - the catch up mechanism.

I was a bit worried that the card crafting would be too strange for her, but after a handful of plays she figured out how and when to use the inserts to her advantage. My mother, who has been playing cards for 70+ years, quickly took to the offered nuances. Deciding what to lead is a very interesting decision. Our first playthrough was a bit disappointing, but we persevered and eventually found the richness Custom Heroes can offer. This is not like other card games we played. It took several playthroughs for the game mechanics and tactics to sink in. Once crafted, the card retains its modification for the rest of the game. You can do this any time as long as you have cards and transparent inserts. You can use the transparent inserts to modify the value of a card, adding or subtracting from the value, to create a pair.
